Or you buy a small multifamily (2-4 units), live in 1 unit, and rent out the other units.House hacking is great when you first get started because it allows you to put a roof over your head, live almost for free after the tenants pay you rent, and it gives you a taste of being a landlord.This might be harder to pull off with a family of five though.

There are legal ways to go through the process if the property is already permitted and possibly market and rent your property from day one, but again, this is just too much risk for our taste which is why we've continued to look at condos that are already zoned to allow STRs.Please feel free to message me if you have any questions as I'll be happy to help out and share our experiences with you.
