He doesn’t enjoy the idea that he is “on the hook” for the loan.

If you are only going to be stationed there for 2-3 years, why not rent a place that is close to work and that you will enjoy living in (within your BAH), and then invest somewhere else where you can have positive cash flow.

Sounds like a great way to die young and not get to enjoy the empire you built.

I do both and enjoy both but they are definitely different animals. 

I enjoy doing the work on my own house but I could I could see it becoming cumbersome the more properties I acquire and it may just make sense to build the cost into the numbers.
