Why not just keep the properties paid for ( you got prop 13 and a step up in depreciation bases ) or do a 1031 exchange before Trump tries to squash that?

They are breaking an agreement, and then to position themselves on the offensive and try to bully there way out of the lease with some trumped up claim is unacceptable.  

If it's a property you are going to hold for a long time, lower payment and improved cashflow probably trumps mortgage balance, so this isn't crazy at all.
