I'm not 100% sure, but I dont think asbestos is in the mud used for popcorn ceilings, even ceilings made 70 years ago.

You can also connect a shop vac to your sanding pole when you have finished taping and mudding {just remember to put the filter bag over the filter in the vac first).BTW:  It does not work as well for knock-down and those sponge-crazy ceilings which have a little more adhesion.

You'll probably need a good mud/texture guy to make sure it all is floated out and looks good since your screwing over existing popcorn and may not have clean seams.
