I have been able to find quality sponsors this way, not to mention all of the education and other benefits of joining a Community.I recommend you find a Community that has a culture that matches your personality - and join several and try them out.

You need to find out what the housing culture at the college is, in that do students stay in houses over the summer? 

It teaches you how to run a team, and culture, creates inspiration, motivates others, talent acquisition (which will come in handy for finding reliable contractors and project managers), and the ability to hire slow and terminate fast. 

The small community mountain culture is great.
