Now you may say if the company goes belly up debt gets paid before equity, which is true, but since we do not have any debt against the loans, if we had to sell off the portfolio it goes to preferred shareholders first and any profits to common shareholders after that.

True, the banks DO have trillions of dollars lying around but they aren't lending it because they can make risk free money by buying treasuries from the Fed at lower interest rates.
