The issue will be the degree to which a property is affected by the crisis slowdown.

Any ideas on what areas I could invest at 17 or would it be smarter to build up the cash I have till I turn 18.Also, I plan to enlist in active duty while trying to get a bachelor's degree.

When I do my financial analysis of a potential STR property, I don't quantify the various degrees of risks and rewards.
