If you own a 3bed 2bath 1524sqft home built in 1964 and it burns to the ground in a community with mostly renters and the average sales price is lower than the median sales price for the greater area the highest and best use may be to donate the land to a local charity and reinvest your insurance claim funds in another property because the cost to build new construction does not make sense in these areas based on comparable sales.

If you only insure the property to $150K (to cover just your investment) then in the case of a total loss the insurance company hands your a check for $150K and you have a destroyed house that you have to demo and hopefully donate to the city.

@Brian Adams of the thousands I've donated to BP, many thousands spent paying for tickets and flights for members to attend their annual thingie, free products and discounts, and the tens of thousands I spent on advertising to help push BP to the top that BP doesn't live by a loyalist perspective.
