Hi Eli,Although some people will just tell their contractor to use "The cheapest" or what is "Cheapest at Home Depot" or spec nothing and let the contractor pick out what he wants.It's best to pick your items using industry standard grading language (for lumber, cement slump, and etc...), or by manufacturer and part number (for paint, faucets, water closets, and etc..).Then work that language into the bid request (and manually verify it is being used on the site vs cheaper knockoffs).Kitchen faucets and shower mixing valves, for instance can vary widely in construction materials, service life, ease of installation (installer time), and ease of service once in service.Also, some manufactures will have grades for items, such as builder, multifamily, hospitality, hospital, homeowner, etc...
