I have a roommate in my unit as well, I currently receive $1650 in monthly rent and will be around $2200 when I move and it's fully rented.

After buying my first real estate property (the story is in Bigger Pockets Podcast #82) I first house hacked getting one or two roommates to pay my mortgage, then I rented the whole house to long term tenants.

2-4 unit is probably better than roommate hacking due to separation of "friends" from business.
