Society enforces ethical conduct better than statues in real estate, you will be shunned, black balled, Realtors may refuse to deal with you, there is little honor among thieves who my be your last associates.

First of all, they already paid their debt to society and unless they have a big red F tattooed on their forehead, I'm not sure why landlords have an apprehension against them.

Society actually encourages the productive use of assets. 

Does society need to provide some level of protection to people in certain situations?

Lots of Vets who are getting out now and or have been out are having a hard time transitioning back into society and workforce.

There is just way too much liability with our litigious society.  

In this new story (http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2010/nov/07/parents-adopt-child-abuse-support) it says 71% of all adoptions (in Britian anyway) will have faced "extreme abuse" that's not a good percentage to support giving children to home that are "loving".

I owe that back to society, albeit with good judgment.

This is known in a capitalist society as the invisible hand.

I find a large part of society will close their ears to anything that upsets their current view of reality.
