I have been on both sides of this issue and done the “decent thing” several times, only to end up with neighbors who refused to pay or chip in when the case was reversed.  

I have a lot of my capital in stocks and this advice has done VERY well for me; buy blue chips on sale.

But if it's something like cold cuts, cheese, bread, eggs, potato chips or pastries I set them out in my yard and put a game camera on it.
