If you don't have a grounding rod tied into your ground/neutral bar on your panel, and I guess, technically, if you don't have all your grounds and neutrals separated on different bus bars in the panel, then you are still just using your neutral for your ground anyway.

Long story even longer, turned out Stan was a con man-- he blew into town, placed an ad, lined up several simultaneous jobs, hired drunks from the local bar who showed up and pretended to work, took whatever money he could get and left town.
