Not all W-2 (active income) is eligible to offset passive losses.

The REI community is super active here and you wont have any problems finding connections.

A lot of people in distressed situations, these are the markets where wealth is transferred and if you want it to transfer your way you have to stay active and make offers. 

The biggest thing they are saving you is the time and stress of finding someone to fix when you're out of state.
