We refer to this as reconciling to the previous tax return.As far as where to get the information to calculate some of these values, most of it can be derived from the closing/settlement documents for the fixed asset.To calculate depreciation, amortization, etc, you'll dig through IRS publications.

I'm 23 years old and plan to use real estate for my retirement, but that's in the distant future.My question is whether it's better to pay off the mortgage as quickly as possible or to buy a rental property as soon as possible.My thoughts are that if I pay off my home, I'll have security and more money each month to invest, as I won't have to make mortgage or rent payments.

The definition of qualified property under Section 179 was expanded in 2017 under TCJA to include the following real property improvements to nonresidential buildings: Roofing Fire protection and alarm systems Security systems HVAC systems So you can expense roofing under Section 179 as long as it is an improvement to a commercial property and meets the Section 179 criteria.
