The only benefit I can see is if the interest is treated differently between the home mortgage and the HELOC.

In my experience, you are thinking through this correctly.I've heard lawyers say, if the loan is in your name (which it has to be for conventional) and the deed is in the LLC, you aren't treating the business as an independent entity and in a severe lawsuit, the corporate veil is pierced and the LLC can be thrown out.I agree that one of the best defenses is to run your properties well. 

If the group is a private group, it is treated like a private email I believe.

I own 13 trailers in one of my parks and I will tell you they are like baby chick eggs and we treat them like that. 

Many of them treat the home as their own and stay long term.Multi's are nice because they generally produce more cash flow, but do require some extra attention.
