In fact they almost never do, as central bank intervention, stock buybacks, an increase of passive investors, high frequency trading/algorithms, interest rate manipulation, quantitative easing, government stimulus spending etc. have been saving the global financial system from falling off a cliff, while befuddling bears and short sellers, for several years leading up to COVID 19.
