The houses are sold very cheap, however to fix them up, you are usually investing about $30k-$100k to make them livable. 

For example, I wanted to buy a cheap, off-market hoarder house or fixer-upper under $X.

Or buy a thermal camera to check for heat losses, they have gotten really cheap.
