I never thought about the beveled edges reducing chips but I did wonder about water as the bevels expose a hair of the core...but a little swelling there would not be as noticeable as on a square edge.

Don't subscribe to the alarmist viewpoint.That said, if you're planning on doing work on the house, or have materials that are chipping and fraying, it's worth bringing in a licensed abatement contractor to test and remove it.
