Now you've just virtually house hacked with some miles between one unit and the other. 

As for being four hours away, much of the buying process is done remotely anyways.Would I need to commute there on a regular basis or can I do most of the stuff virtually.

Once you move out, virtually all Insurance companies will want the Homeowners policy to be changed to a form for a rented dwelling (most commonly called a Dwelling Fire policy).

This was a large apartment, so it took approximately 3 months to complete working alone and sometimes with a helper (hired help is virtually nonexistent currently in NY).

Two ways to look at a house hack:  from a purely investment perspective, or from a housing cost reduction perspective.From a purely investment perspective analyze a deal as if you as one of the unit tenants will "virtually pay" yourself the same rent as the other tenants. 

I kept plugging away,  looking online at properties, using the rental calculator, going to see the properties either virtually or in person and then if feasible making an offer for 60 days or so.   

Look for meet ups in your area (virtual), attend free webinars, start reading as much as possible on any and all topics related to investing and real estate.
