Well I have contractor telling me 5 inches depth is enough.

Took it all down & shellacked every inch of the plaster walls & it worked. 

They may also not have known that of the 2 buildings for the storage facility all but 2 inches on one of those buildings is on the apartment lot.

Plywood plus cement makes for almost a one inch transition .

I have learned that the old saying "give an inch, take mile" usually defines these situations.
