Our situation:8-plex, no washer/dryer hooks ups in units, separate laundry room accessed from the outside with a key, each tenant household is issued a laundry key, rules for use of the laundry are posted in the laundry room and written into the rental agreement, laundry room hours are 8am-10pm, there's a natural gas hot water heater, one electric washer ($1) and one electric dryer ($1) - which is less expensive than local laundromats, one utility sink, one laundry work surface attached to the wall for tenants to sort and fold their laundry, one baseboard heater, one floor drain.

You could always get them to pay all of the household utilities and amenities, even some of your personal bills in roughly the same amount that rent would be.

To provide every American household with decent, affordable housing, given the large and widening gap between incomes and housing costs, will require vastly more government subsidies than we now devote to housing - the exact amount of course depends on what kinds of programs, what systems of financing, ownership, development and management we choose (the more market-oriented, the larger the cost; the more we create a social housing sector, the smaller the cost), but think along the lines of $80-100 billion annually.

When you are low income, the process of moving is much more difficult because of all the deposits you have to save up for, the lack of transportation to actually move the household items, etc.
