I certainly can't add any perspective, but my guess would be that GDP growth is highly correlated with social mobility and thus this is why you observe this.

It's just my observation over many years, but you can often tell how much money someone makes by how much they complain about paying taxes.I've been surrounded by high-earners and wealthy people for much of my career, and low-earners and poorer people for much of my career, and there's a very high correlation between earning less and complaining about taxes.
