If you really wanted to invest there, you would be wise to do 2-4 more times, meet some local investors and out-of-area investors.

They can definitely tell you what you need to know legally and licensing wise in NJ/NY as there are some restrictions in certain states and I think NJ is one of them. 

Gotta respect the wise as long as they aren't cheating, lying, stealing or have malice intention.
