We have been blessed to serve a a ton of Bigger Pockets clients and the biggest challenge we have with house hackers is the FHA Self Sustainability test.. 75% of the overall rent has to cover the PITI.. with rates where they are this has been a big challenge. 

The same listing can go from a great cash flow on day one to negative cash flow based on how the buyer plans to finance it (conventional investor loan with 25% down, FHA 3% down house hacker, cash, etc).

When you hear about their experience as a house hacker and baby landlord, you will know whether it makes sense or not.

It would be a great place for landlords or house hackers due to the split foyer and double kitchen.

I have made several great connections on BP from contractors to many millions in closed deals from house hacker clients.

I’m having a hard time finding information on the financing piece of how house hackers build their real estate portfolio – is this plan generally sound?

Not a house-hacker but I see no reason it wouldn't work within this strategy. 

As a house hacker myself, I am doing it at my wife and I's current duplex and will continue to do it for at least our first few properties.
