Are there any guidelines or best practices (ie: rewiring such a property would be more valuable than updating insulation).Is it something you need to ask the insurance company about to get, or is all this determined in the initial interview with the potential insurer?

I visited detroit this summer and I was surprised on how nice downtown Detroit was.

We have been at this for about 4 years have 5 properties and 7 doors and are also looking to keep growing.

You're buying a business, so you need to read the financials. 

You and your husband are definitely in the right place to get valuable information.

Ideally this would be a multi-family property that I can live in and rent out the other units.

Read some books.
