In addition, the general education requirement at most universities (hopefully) expose one to subjects as well as people, that one might not otherwise have been exposed to.There are other pursuits in life besides money.

I think it's very feasible and lot's of benefit from the education and expose to inner circle of the people in the industry.

I love apprenticeships for people who don't know what they want to do,  but it takes years to start getting traction and it's a specialized skill set.You need something that will expose you to more than 1 trade and a lot of different situations. 

He evaluates deals in my area and when he spots one, he sends me out to evaluate using his "trade methods", in exchange he is offering me a profit share, knowledge, and and has asked me to sign a 2-year non-compete.I'm not sure what I'm exposing myself to by signing this non-compete.

What if I expose 50k and it takes you a year with you exposed at 20k, and you decide that that since it has already been a year, you need to break even, or a 10k profit.

The members of an LLC are issued K-1 Form and have to pay taxes on all profits as though it were income, which could expose the owners to high employment taxes.

If you really like the land you should think about tying it up on an option first before exposing it to lots of folks in your investigations - people who might become interested themselves or mention the property to someone else.
