There is a huge advantage to investing in your backyard - logistics!

Ambergris is not considered "remote" per se, it is where 70% of all of the overnight tourists go at some point during their vacation, but you do have to barge in materials, and that can be a logistical undertaking.  

The tricky part is logistics due to no bridge & only boats for transportation.

Has anyone figured out logistics such as cleaning/maintaining property and such in Mexico?

Logistical issues as to how do you get the water piping from the front building into the rear building or add a separate line outside the front building through the side yard so you don't have to open up the basement slab.

@Ashwin Gudipati My advice would be not to execute rehabs remotely unless you have completed 3 or 4 and understand the logistical challenges from an owners perspective.

If you're providing a luxury or high end property, it should probably be expected that fire wood would be provided; especially considering the logistics of obtaining firewood that could potentially be laborious or troublesome and inconvenient.
