Is there fiber in the building (or to the building) and is there a fire suppression system.

.- Any holes in the exterior for things like cable or satellite TV lines, phone lines, or fiber Internet should be caulked.  

Are they mostly clapboards, shakes, or fiber-cement?

If it's "fiber cement" siding, it may contain asbestos. 

Now, personally, I think the fiber market could be developed into an industry that would be easy to grow and harvest on large scale.
