Since KnT hasnt been used since the late 30’s early 40’s you can be assured the cotton and rubber coverings are as brittle and dry as a cracker and more like kindling than wiring.

So if I had some really viscous stain I would wet sand the whole thing with 1000 grit sand paper or a 00 steel wool.

Unless you really know what you are doing, the wool can easily be pulled over your eyes.
