Don't really have an answer to this question but it is cool seeing other people in a similar situation as me trying this out.

Offer to assist a contractor if they're cool and do all the gross work for 'em like tearing down plaster or carrying sheetrock.

Turn you idea into a real system or device or whatever it is and get it patented.
