Wood is a better insulator than vinyl so other then a more updated look and maybe easier to open windows I think I may follow suit with what you're doing and just keep the storm windows on and touch up the interior wood windows.

You'll find really good tips here on hardening your rentals, and you'll find it better to just paint all in one color to make it cheaper and easier for future touch-ups.
