If he is more involved or engages in the activity with regularity it would be treated accordingly as self employment Which could be a good thing from a tax planning standpoint.

Then we would buy a new sf to live in soon (we are engaged and plan on getting married in a yr or two).My real estate goals are not based on instant money now but on long term goals 15-20 yrs from now.  

I'm ready to engage more, both on the forums and in real-life REI.

I was trying to go for a small group where everyone is actively engaged.

Sometimes, even stopping and engaging in conversation with folks who live there just to get a better feel ... etc.In understand there are plenty of challenges in such areas.
