You would get a nicotine buzz just standing in the house.

You can take the lock apart with relative ease and then remove the operative components or you can just use a gel type of crazy glue on the locking mechanism with the lockset in place. 

If there are unauthorized pets and unauthorized smoking, we can often see the evidence in the furnace filter as it traps pet hair and gets a tinge of yellow color from nicotine.

If you have smokers in there, use a regular Swizzle floor mop (I think that's what it's called-- the ones with the replaceable cleaning pad) to scrub the cabinets and walls-- takes most of the nicotine right off.

clean everything with tsp and, following the directions, apply a coat of General Finishes gel stain in the same or slightly darker color.
