If you aren't brilliant and don't have any scholarships, your first few years of college is essentially paying the college to give you the same education you can probably get cheaper at a community college.Colleges exist not to pass along knowledge, but to seek larger endowments, expand their real estate breadth and reach, continue their upward climb in rankings, and always increase number of students YOY.
