My wife on the other hand is the compassionate one who is typically more accommodating.

My wife and I came up with a plan to send a compassionate but stern text/email to her Monday saying we will work with her these last two months but the balance will be due by April, otherwise it will come out of her deposit.

If not, be compassionate and provide them a longer runway to find housing and relocate.

The family views it as easy to just let the belongings sit in your property and as long as you are not pressuring them, they don't care.Be compassionate, but also be careful to not extend special policies.

So I’d just talk to her compassionately and honestly to get answers.

To start with trying to get the tenants our, your first mistake was hiring an attorney that probably intimidated them and you caused them to build a wall that reduced your ability to communicate in any compassionate manner when you know they are elderly and have a family member they care for.COVID has caused everyone on this planet a huge amount of stress and now you want to add more stress by upending your tenants' lives.

Basically, I take a compassionate "I understand things happen approach" and let them know I'm offering them a lifeline.
