Outside of aesthetics, make sure you have cleaners, maintenance and turnaround worked out so you go in with a solid plan.

. - Furnishings and Design: Active vacation rentals are usually sold furnished, vacant homes are not.

Unless the designer has a good social/online footprint with designs I like, I would think twice before hiring them no matter what others say.  

I do think that in many cases pool fences ruin the aesthetic and the Airbnb pictures so I'm sure that's why some hosts are cutting corners.
