Just did the floor in a bathroom and it took longer to pull up the old flooring (2 layers of linoleum sandwiching a layer of self adhesive tiles;) than it did to buy and install the new vinyl tiles.

You can also connect a shop vac to your sanding pole when you have finished taping and mudding {just remember to put the filter bag over the filter in the vac first).BTW:  It does not work as well for knock-down and those sponge-crazy ceilings which have a little more adhesion.

After the ceiling is dry it is best to sand the surface, this will remove any residue left on the sheetrock and give you a better surface to apply your new texture of paint.Depending on where you are, check your local codes for disposal.

That leaves me with option 4 which would be very cost effective and relatively simple to do...cut the planks to the correct size, find the joists with a stud finder, and nail them up after applying an adhesive to them as well.
