@Matt Michaelson agree 100%.We own a roofing company and we get asked all the time same question how much does 20 sq shingles cost to tear off and install.

I'm not trying to itemize per shingle on a new roof or per board on a new deck. 

Remember they must be removed to properly re-shingle a roof.

They had asbestos shingles, propane gas for washer/dryer/stove, oil for heat with 50-year-old burner.

Is it 3 tab shingles or architectural.

If the roof has several layers of shingles, make sure there are no signs of sagging or warping.

The sun came up in the east, you stubbed your toe, you don't like the color of the shingles. 

For me, I think people need to be looking beyond the normal stick, brick, and asphalt shingles.

You have a 30 year shingle, be ready to replace at 20.
