To verify, I tried multiple experiments, such as bidding on a phone watch for android on their jewelry section, you can pick them up from $49 to $89 on multiple websites (same model) I did a test bid for $40 over the high retail price, and sure enough, to try to me to go higher they counter bid.

My wife was more into power tools than jewelry and still trying to lay bathroom tile at 7 months pregnant ... she's a keeper :-) Hopefully by the time you have kids, you'll be ready to graduate to the next step in your REI career anyhow.

In my opinion, the only way to manage risk is to not invest all/most of your money in any one year,  but instead, spread it out over multiple vintages/years.
