My wife's side of the family is very debt averse as carrying a mortgage is considered risky in their culture.

It seems to me that our financial behaviors change over time and through generations, cultures, etc. and this could start to skew how representative the DTI ratio really is.

@Michael Doherty, my observation having invested in several countries is that the cultural differences influence whether this is good or bad.
