We were informed that the property still has a mortgage of around 80k and the ladys children plan on letting the bank take the property.

Operators tell me that the objection to the costs are from the children of the elder who don’t want mom to spend down her savings, fearing that she will run out of money and that there will not be any left to pass down to the kids.

House hacking is out of the question, I have two young children and a wife who will truly think I have lost my mind if I suggest we move and / or rent out a portion of our house.

I would look for inspiration from within.

A lot of people are not good with money, plain and simple, and a lot of times those people are our children, siblings, or parents.

Just like raising children, rental properties do best when watched closely.
