They were often constructed for a family member to have some semi-autonomy but to also be close to the rest of the family.Depending on zoning they could be illegal and this could cause problems with the town as well as with financing.

If you are self-motivated and don’t need someone regulating your business (ie desk hours), then look at smaller or boutique brokerages that will allow you more autonomy.
