I would advise having a website with good SEO to drive traffic to you.

The ONLY thing that matters is your traffic, NOT competition, and definitely not Google.ALL you need to care about is providing value to your traffic, and you are not going to accomplish this by kissing Google butt.Do I know what I am talking about?

You rank #1 because your traffic finds your website the most useful website relative to the specific keywords they typed into Google.ANYONE that dares tell you about backlinks, and some BS 2 tier linking profile and all that crap... knows NOTHING about SEO.So you want to rank#1?

SEO is best bang for your buck no matter how you spin it.The downside on SEO is that it takes time.So the best strategy is getting a website, make it absolutely credible, then drive paid traffic to it for instant returns.
