Johann, a 90 minute rating on a door leading from a common hallway to a basement is more than sufficent, some of the factors that are considered in determining the mininum code requirement for this type of door would be is it a 1-2 family dwelling, type of construction (wood frame, masonary, steel) and occupancy load (how many people live in the building) is it protected (sprinkler system) and the list goes on and on...also take a look at the construction surrounding the door, if we assume 2 x 4 wood framing with a 1/2 layer of drywall per side, this is 40 minute rating at best, so why install a door that will outlast the surrounding structure?
