Our experience has been when you include the labour to install a properly sealed vapour barrier, followed by batt insulation, the difference between the two is <10%.If you are retrofitting an older (Second Empire, Victorian, Edwardian, etc) building where there was likely no insulation (or perhaps newspaper and sawdust), the outer sheeting is live-edge planks and you may be dealing with balloon framing, application of closed cell spray foam will be less expensive and much, much quicker than the labour required to achieve a full sealed vapour barrier with batt (or blown/packed cellulose) insulation.Q: How long does the spray foam process take?
