Its a semi-good economy and lots of people in the trades aging out of system.  15-20 years ago people said it was stupid to go into teaching because Teacher College was nearly as competitive as many law schools, or PT schools but the salary wasn't there. 

Also keep in mind that the equity you gain is going to be semi-locked up...
