Industrial setups like this can go up to a 5' diameter drain basin that's many feet deep... but you're talking about thousands of gallons of water being dealt with (Storm sewers, basically)For added effectiveness, replace the 5gal bucket with an actual ADS/Hancor/Draintech drain basin and run french drains around the area and into the basin to collect more water (make sure the drains slope into the basin)... a centrally-located basin with 'legs' of french drains going in all directions can control even serious water seepage.

I would expect the entire unit to only have a few gallons in it.

If you buy ten gallons of paint to cover the entire exterior, half of that would be an expense towards the rental and half towards your primary home.
