As an investor, if comps tend to harm me more than help, then how do I make sure I'm making a good investment if I shouldn't use the comps around the house?

Look for some of those to go in as an LP (limited partner) and learn and grow your knowledge, skills and investment money so you'll be ready for the next accredited deal. 

I believe you can also utilize an independent savings account, but you should check with the bank to make sure.
