You need a full respirator mask (not just N95) and you should even wear body gear and shower immediately after working on this.

Also, if your doing the overhaul, don't get it on your skin and don't breathe it without a respirator.

We LITERALLY had to wear respirators to enter the house to work on it!

The issues is when it becomes airborne, especially suspended in air and respirated. 

Expect to pay at least two times your painting costs, the workers will have to be in a white jumpsuit if they follow to the letter doubling their work time, this is in most occasions, in some degrees, they have to even wear almost gas masks type respirators and a perimeter protection should be in place.

If not, plan on it costing more as there will need to be plastic laid out for 20 feet from the structure, signs posted, and the painter will need to wear a spacesuit, respirator, and gloves.

If you do take it down yourself, make sure the place is well ventilated (open windows), the ceiling is sprayed to minimize dust, you wear a respirator/mask and safety glasses and you block off the rooms that don't have the popcorn ceiling with plastic.
